Selection Criteria : To be or Not to be ?

An IIM thrive to create perfect manager, someone who will not just do mundane activities. I have been in numerous debate with my colleagues to identify criterion for a perfect manager. Most of the time conversation highlights academic excellence as one of the logical criteria to justify everything. It is not their fault as most of them were judged based on similar criterion when they got their entry in the coveted B-School.

With successful people present on both sides of bucket, Is choosing people with brilliant academic record is correct ? Aren't we missing a link here ? or shouldn't we need to search for some other parameters which are more closer to our search for a perfect manager? These questions will always haunts the generations to come and may be a wrong correlation can destroy the brand built in centuries.

Heaven, Haven or Mr. Lonely

An engineer is the only one who can tell you importance of a girl in life. Someone is not less than a rock star, if he is able to woo a girl in his engineering college. But, life is not constant always & MBA is no less than an oasis for thirsty souls like us. At first, it was difficult for me to absorb the idea of having so many girls around. A constant sound of chattering was annoying. Slowly & suddenly, my inner self has started receiving & understanding the melody in that sound and trust me it has nothing to do with my hearing abilities. During graduation, we used to get excited on having prospect of having a single girl in our group & here every group has at-least one girl. I am now the biggest fan of demand supply issue. Back then scoring was legendary, but now it's not that highly valued. You just need willingness with right amount of luck with impeccable timing. Scoring won't be that difficult. But again, we still have all categories of males here Heaven, Haven or Mr. Lonely!

BITS to IIM Transition : Morning Classes

One of the best thing about BITS was 0% attendance rule. You can decide whether you would want to attend a class or not ? And there always used to be a guy whose sound advice will let you bunk almost all the classes. "Dude, this course is so easy, its better to read from book rather than attending lectures", or "Dude, I can teach you better than prof., don't worry", or "Dude, How many lectures will you attend, you are a ghotu". A similar guy acts as a deterrence for attending classes at IIM too, but you simply tend to resist the idea because of grade drop phenomenon. It's difficult to loose hard earned grades, that too when good grades are hard to come by and the dumbest thing would be to fail a course in a B-School. When I joined IIM Kozhikode, toughest thing for me was to attend morning classes. My sun was never in the sky so early. Tactfully and skillfully I have survived till 4th trimester. I do hope to survive rest of my days here. Amen!
